So, recently, after about a year of going through literally four different doctors and 3 separate studies, I finally got a diagnosis of sleep apnea, kinda of. I technically have an asthma/reactive airway syndrome kind of thing that is apparently caused from spending time living in a house full of black mold (we didn't know and we moved out as soon as we did). I finally got a prescription for a cpap on Halloween, and I've been using it since then, but I feel like I'm still tired all the time. My doctor says that it gets better eventually, but when is eventually? I found out that I have several friends with sleep apnea, and it seems like its more common than I thought. So does anyone here also have it? Is there a point in which it stops sucking? Has anyone looked into any of the surgical treatments? My doctor was running a trial on a couple, but I don't qualify for them yet since I haven't been trying other treatments for long enough.

Im a respiratory therapist, sleep apnea def is pretty common, my boyfriend has it, he cant sleep without his machine nor would i want him too, im such a light sleeper and his snoring could wake the dead.
Not sure if you are overweight but i know with a lot of cases i see its because of weight and no neck, so losing weight could help. However others are skinny as a stick and still have it, never talked to any of my patients about a surgical option though.
I know this post is old, hopefully your body is adjusting better and you feel less tired now!
I don't have sleep apnea, but I do have narcolepsy without cataplexy.
I am definitely adjusting better. Still kind of tired, but I think it's because I take my cpap mask off in my sleep sometimes then argue with my husband (still while asleep) about how I don't want to put it back on. I'm just the best, lol. I am on a diet and am trying to lose weight, but I never had trouble sleeping or breathing until I lived in the whole mold situation, which I am hoping doesn't mean it's never getting better, but who knows.
That also seems like it's pretty hard to deal with. My husband had a narcolepsy study recently, and they said that he doesn't actually have it even though he has the cataplexy symptoms. The doctor seemed to think that he just looked up a bunch of buzzwords on the internet. Smh.

I have sleep apnea. Or maybe narcolepsy. Or maybe nothing. I've given up at this point because the diagnosis keeps changing and nothing helped.
I used the cpap for a few months until my doctor said it wouldn't get any better than it was. It was taking more energy to keep it clean and set it up every night than it was giving me. I was on stimulants but recently had to stop them. My sleep doctor said he wasn't convinced it was a sleep issue, even tho I sleep more than I'm awake. It's not depression; I just went off my antidepressants and I've mentally never felt better. So I have no idea what it is.
But I'm around seven weeks pregnant and honestly, I have more energy than ever. I'm awake right now. I'm sitting at my computer. I'm functioning and I haven't had stimulants in weeks. The first six weeks were absolutely awful but now I feel amazing and I have no idea why. I've read that can happen with pregnancy for people with narcolepsy but the sleep doctor said the lack of REM sleep on my studies meant that's not what it was. But I was also taking Effexor during the studies which effects REM sleep. So I have no idea.
I want to do another sleep study after the little parasite is born but I kinda hope things stay how they are now. I know it's wishful thinking though :/ Everything I've read says symptoms come back pretty much right away.
Ah well. At least I have seven or so months of hopefully not sleeping 18hrs a day. It really sucks, though. It's so hard to get anything done when just getting up and having a shower means needing a nap. Constantly being sleep deprived has pretty serious effects on the body. If you don't feel like the cpap is working for you, I'd suggest pushing for another sleep study. There's no guarantee you'll find answers but there's no harm in it, either.
I've never actually been diagnosed with it, but my fiancee (who is a terribly light sleeper) freaks out at me because I often will stop breathing in my sleep.
I've also known for a long time that I'm a sleep talker and walker. So. Fun?
I was tested for it and while the tests apparently said I don't have it, I still suspect that I might. I'm quite overweight though, so hoping my sleeping difficulties go away as I lose weight. My dad has it though, we're thinking maybe because of his smoking.
